Occurrence Type: Car vs Deer
Occurrence Number: GR – 32
Details
The WGPS investigated three car/deer collisions in the past week. Police would like to remind motorists to be particularly cautious this time of year. Police are reminding drivers to be especially attentive from sunset to mid-night, and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. These are high risk times. Drive with caution when moving through deer-crossing areas known for large deer population. Pay close attention in areas where the road divides agricultural fields from wooded areas. Use high beams at night when there is no oncoming traffic. High beams will better illuminate the eyes of the deer on or near the roadway. Slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away. Continually scan the ditches and remember if you see one deer there are likely more in the immediate vicinity. Brake firmly when you see a deer in or near the roadway, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their own vehicles
