Between July 22th and 29st the West Grey Police Service responded to 86 calls for service.

 

Arson

On Sunday July 22nd 2018 at approximately 3:00am, police were dispatched to an address in the 100 block of Garafraxa Street in the Town of Durham regarding a building on fire. The accused went to a basement window of the building, set fire to spray foam insulation. The accused then fled, the accused was identified by one of the tenants. The accused was located a short time after receiving the initial call. The fire spread into the building filling the apartments above with smoke. The fire burnt through the window and set fire to electrical wiring. There were numerous people residing in the building, including children. A tenant awoke and was able to extinguish the fire. One of the tenants was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. The accused was charged with Arson Disregard for Life contrary to section 433(a) C.C. and held for a Bail Hearing.

Break and Enter

On Sunday July 22nd 2018 and Wednesday 25th July 2018 a Break and Enter occurred at an address in the 100 block of Garafraxa Street in the Town Durham.  The building had been evacuated due to a fire on the 22nd July 2018 and was uninhabitable at the time. On the 25th of July 2018 at 11:00am the complainant returned to his residence to retrieve some personal items. At this time the complainant noticed one 50’’ Samsung and one 40’’ Samsung televisions had been stolen. Possession of Stolen property, Possession of Meth, Possession of Heroin, Breach of Probation

 

On Tuesday July 24, 2018 at approximately 8:00am officers of the West Grey Police Service were dispatched to a vehicle that was un-plated and broke down on Highway 6, the investigation reviled this vehicle was stolen out of Grey County OPP area.  A description of persons associated to this vehicle was given to the officer, at this time the officer was familiar with one of the suspects. The suspects was possibly operating a black Nissan SUV.

 

The officer patrolled the area and located this vehicle, initiated a vehicle stop. Both the male 27-year-old driver and the male 31-year-old passenger were arrest for possession of stolen property.  Search of the vehicle they were operating reviled the males were in possession of Heroin, methamphetamine.

Both males were charged with Possession of Stolen property over, Possession of Stolen Property Over, Possession of Heroin. The 31-year-old male was further charged with addition counts of Possession of Methamphetamine, Possession of Stolen Credit Card, five counts of Fail to Comply with Recognizance.  The 27-year-old was released on a Promise to Appear, the 31-year-old was held for a Bail Hearing at the Walkerton Courthouse.

 

Attempt Murder

 

In the early morning hours of July 26th 2018, West Grey Police officers were dispatched to attend a residence at Glenelg-Holland Townline where a person in distress was found to have been shot with a firearm.

 

Upon arrival the victim was transported to a nearby hospital and was subsequently transported by Ornge to be treated for his injuries. West Grey Police Service, in assistance with the Ontario Provincial Police emergency response teams, contained the area where it was believed that the suspect would be.

 

Upon investigation, the suspect was identified as 31-year-old Christopher NEVIUS of Kitchener, ON. With this information, the West Grey Police Service Criminal Investigations Bureau partnered alongside with the Waterloo Regional Police Service and began to use resources to locate NEVIUS. Police were able to determine that the suspect was in the Bloomingdale Road South area of Kitchener.

 

Members of the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Emergency Response Team located NEVIUS and executed a high-risk arrest on Bridge Street in Kitchener, ON. Officers seized three loaded handguns, rounds of ammunition, a large quantity of cash and suspected methamphetamine and pills.

 

31-year-old Christopher NEVIUS of Kitchener was arrested for one count of attempted murder and one count of discharging a firearm with intent. West Grey Police Service then attended Waterloo Regional Police Service to take custody of NEVIUS and to bring him to the Walkerton Courthouse where he is scheduled to appear on July 27, 2018.

Warrants

 

On Thursday 26th July 2018 West Grey Police Service attended an address on Glenelg-Holland Townline in the former Township of Glenelg within the Municipality of West Grey regarding a warrant investigation.

On the property was approximately $55,000.00 in stolen property, these items were seized from the property and will be returned to the owners. Ammunition was also located on this property and seized.

The female person that resides at this address is prohibited from possessing ammunition will be charged with numerous Criminal Code and Firearm Act charges. A warrant will be sought for the arrest of this female

The investigation is continuing.

Warrants

On Thursday 26 July 2018 at approximately 2:10pm a vehicle observed by police exiting the driveway on Glenelg-Holland Townline in the Municipality of West Grey. At the time the property was considered an active crime scene where an attempt murder had taken place. The property was being contained by members of the West Grey Police Service and the Ontario Provincial Police.

The driver a 24 year-old male of Owen Sound and passenger a 30 year-old female vehicle were known by police were arrested at this time. The male had an outstanding arrest warrant with the Owen Sound Police Service. The female was breaching a condition of her Probation with communicating with this male.

Upon further investigation the vehicle being operated was stolen from Owen Sound

The male is being charged for possession of stolen property, was released on a Promise to Appear from West Grey Police Service and turn over to Owen Sound Police Service on the warrant and held for a bail hearing.

The female was charged with Breach of Probation, Possession of Stolen Property and held for a Bail Hearing at the Walkerton Courthouse.

Domestic Assault / Utter Threats

On Saturday 28 July 2018 at approximately 4:00pm police were advised to attend an address in the Town of Durham within the Municipality of West Grey regarding a Domestic Assault. The investigation determined that the victim suffered minor injuries, the accused was charged with Assault and Utter Threats to cause death. The accused will be attending Walkerton Courthouse on a later date.
